Over the holidays, three members of Atherton High’s Interact Club travelled with teacher Cathy Campbell to East Timor on a study tour. East Timor is one of Australia’s closest neighbours but is the poorest nation in Asia. Together with two Interact students from Darwin High School, our students met and worked with young Timorese people and community leaders to discuss and plan projects that our Club can undertake to assist students and communities in Timor. The highlight of the trip was visiting several schools in the mountain region of Aileu and an orphanage in the village of Hera. Our students were struck by the generosity, happiness and positivity of the Timorese people, in stark contrast to their absolute poverty and ever-present tragic history. Our Interact Club will be working on several projects over the coming semester including support projects for East Timor and Cambodia, the ongoing Mats for the Homeless project for our Cairns community and the Great Northern Cleanup of Rotary Park later in the year.
