Last Thursday 28th April, Atherton State
High School music students were fortunate enough to take part in a Jazz music
workshop held by lecturers from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
Students from the AHSH Music Academy played a number of songs that they have
been working on this year for the CQCM lecturers, who were quite impressed with
their sound. Students were encouraged to develop improvisational skills and
perform solo parts. Another key focus was to explore groove, anticipation,
articulation and phrasing. The lecturers demonstrated groove by performing
various jazz songs in many different styles from Rock, to Swing, to Country to
a Latin Samba. The students were very impressed with their refined skills. We
look forward to maintaining an annual link with the Central Queensland
Conservatorium of Music in future years as many of our music students have gone
on to attend this University.
