Over the past week, students from Atherton High participated in the Cairns Gala Hockey days.  A very big thankyou to Miss Ciranni and Mr Cole for organising and accompanying our students so they could have the opportunity to participate! The girls’ team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship in their games, despite starting a player short, and a player sustaining an injury within minutes the first game.  Although the girls were 2 players short on the field they did a fantastic job at being competitive. The girls kept a close score line to the overall winners TAS, however they came away without a placing. Outstanding guidance by Alice Phillips and Laura Trezise. Alex Bew showed brilliant aggression and determination which led to a number of goals for the team. The Atherton boys’ team experienced great success and were crowned tournament Champions. After progressing through the pool and preliminary final games undefeated, with outstanding performances by Paul Nasser, Mitch Toward, Billy McDonald and Byron Schep, Atherton had the opportunity to play in the grand-final against Redlynch SHS. The final was a tightly fought contest. Although Atherton enjoyed a 2-0 lead at half-time, Redlynch fought back to 2-1 early in the second half. Some determined defensive work from Jordan Riesen and Rhett Lamperd, and a magnificent full length save by goalie Ben Lowe in the closing stages of the match, helped secure victory. Well done to all students who represented the school and thank you to all parents who assisted with transporting students to and from Cairns.
