The Year 12 Aerospace Studies students recently visited Cairns Airport as part of their Airport Redesign assessment task.  The students are tasked with researching and redesigning Cairns Airport for the expected future growth of the airport.  They will base their designs on the theory of airport design taught in the class lessons and their practical experience at Cairns Airport. The airport visit was also an opportunity for the students to observe certain aviation career pathways.  During the day, Aviation Australia showed the students their facilities, including a careers presentation. The students then got to walk around the large Hawker Pacific aircraft maintenance hangar.  The students got to see many different aircraft in various states of maintenance and repair.  Cairns Airport Pty Ltd allowed the students to enter the restricted “airside” area to observe the modernised baggage handling facility, their airport operations centre and then into the terminal area.   The industry visit ended with a guided tour of the Aircraft Turnaround Services and Engineering Base – a brand new 7 million dollar facility. The students got to sit in the cockpit of a British Aerospace BAe 146 jet used for cargo hauling. An awesome experience!  Industry visits and relationships are an integral part of the Aerospace Studies subject and they allow students to see the real-life application of their studies.  And the students really enjoy the interactions!
