Student Leadership is a valued tradition at Atherton SHS and we value and recognise the need for interested students to have the opportunity to develop and apply personal leadership skills, knowledge and positive attitudes through a structured and well organised student leadership system.
“Leadership is understanding people and involving them to help you do a job. That takes all of the good characteristics, like integrity, dedication of purpose, selflessness, knowledge, skill, implacability, as well as determination not to accept failure."
- Admiral Arleigh A . Burke
Varied opportunities exist for students to develop leadership skills and responsibilities. For the junior secondary years, students are able to self-nominate into the leadership system by way of an application and interview. The junior secondary leaders are active members of the student council, lead the junior secondary parades and contribute positively towards the school community.
For the senior secondary years, students are able to self-nominate into the leadership system by way of application, interview and voting in the student executive positions in Year 12. The student leadership system at Atherton SHS is defined in the
Student Leadership Handbook (PDF, 4MB).
Student leaders play a vital role in guiding the students of the school and in organising school celebrations such as full school parades, junior and senior school parades, student council, Presentation evening, ANZAC ceremony and many other school events.
Our student prefecture plays a vital role in the transition of Year 6 and 7 students into the Atherton High family.
Students interested in becoming part of the student leadership system at Atherton SHS need to make contact with the Head of Junior Secondary (Years 7-9) or Head of Senior Secondary (Years 10-12).
